ABSTRACT

The relationship between areca nut as a primary carcinogen and oral cancer has been widely concerned. Areca can change the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and autophagy in cells, and the levels of ROS and autophagy are closely related to the occurrence and development of tumors. This paper reviewed the relationships among areca nut, intracellular ROS, and autophagy.

ABSTRACT

Large general hospitals currently play an increasingly important role in the diagnosis and treatment for acute critical patients and difficult diseases because of the development of dual referral system and hierarchical diagnosis, as well as the formation of medical treatment alliance. Patients with oral cancers are often associated with systemic diseases, which increases the complexity of the condition. Thus, meeting the demand through the traditional single medical model is difficult. As such, a multidisciplinary team (MDT) model has been proposed and has achieved a good clinical effect. To standardize the application of this model, we organized an event in which relevant experts discussed and formulated a consensus to provide standardized suggestions on the MDT process and the diagnosis and treatment of common systemic diseases as reference for clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

The study aimed to retrospectively evaluate surgical treatment outcomes after delayed parotid gland and duct injuries.Nine patients subjected to parotid gland and duct injuries with 1-to 3-month treatment delay were retrospectively evaluated with special reference of etiology, past medical history, and injury location.Conservative treatment, microsurgical anastomosis, and diversion of salivary flow or ligation were chosen for delayed parotid gland and duct injuries concerning to their site of injury, time of repair and procedures.Assistant treatment as pressure dressing was adopted thereafter. All patients experienced an uneventful recovery at the time of finalizing the study. Two patients received Stensen's duct ligation,5 received microsurgical anastomosis and 2 accepted salivary flow diversion for 5 patients with sialoceles and 4 patients with fistulas, and no re-occurrence was found.Facial paralysis occurred after surgery in 4 patients, and 3 of them recovered after the nerve nutrition treatment. Our study suggested that appropriate surgical treatment is efficient for the re-establishment of the tissue function and facial aesthetic for delayed injury of the parotid and its duct.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore a method for ectopic prefabrication of mandible with vascular pedicle.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Cancellous bone blocks harvested from the dog ribs were packaged with mandible-shaped titanium mesh scaffold and implanted into latissimus dorsi of dog with thoracodorsal artery and vein through the scaffold. After 12 weeks, bone formation and vascularization were evaluated by gross inspection, histological examination and immunohistochemistry.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Vascularized mandible with thoracodorsal artery and vein were formed and histological staining and immunohistochemisty confirmed new bone formation and vascularization.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>There is feasibility for ectopic prefabrication of vascularized mandible graft using cancellous ribs, which provides a new method for mandibular defect reconstruction. Experimental study on ectopic prefabrication of vascularized mandible graft with autogenous ribs.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the expression of chemokine receptor CCR7 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its possible role in directional neck lymph node metastasis.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The expression of chemokine receptor CCR7 was examined in 85 cases of OSCC, normal oral mucosa, and Tca8113 and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC-M) cell lines using immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR and Western blotting. The relationship between the expression and clinicopathological factors of OSCC was analyzed. After treatment with or without CCR7 antibody, in vitro adhesion assay was performed to compare the adhesion of Tca8113 and ACC-M cells to lymph nodes.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>CCR7 was expressed in 66% (56/85) of OSCC cases, and there was a significant difference in CCR7 expression between metastasis group (31/39, 79%) and non-metastasis group (25/46, 54%). RT-PCR and Western blotting also confirmed the presence of positive CCR7 expression in OSCC. Tca8113 cells expressing CCR7 showed stronger ability to adhere to lymph nodes as compared to CCR7-negative ACC-M cells and could be actively inhibited by CCR7 antibody.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>CCR7 may play an important role in the development and lymph node metastasis of oral squamous cell carcinoma.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the characteristics of mandible and condyle in Dmp1 gene knockout mice, and to investigate the role of Dmp1 in the osteogenesis and mineralization of bone and cartilage.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Dmp1-/-mice were executed at birth, 2 weeks, 2 months, 3 months and 5 months, and the mandible was taken out for physical, radiography, transmission electron microscopic, and histological examination. The difference between Dmp1 knockout mouse (ko) and wild type mouse (wt) in bone development, bone densitometry and histology were compared.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>There were obvious changes in the mandible and condyle of Dmp1-/-mouse, such as incomplete ossification, low density, decreased volume and condyle cartilage degeneration.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Dmp1 is the key factor in the formation of growth plates and secondary ossification center, and plays an important role in the process of bone and cartilage formation and bone nodule remodeling. Dmp1 may be the candidate gene that controls the development of mandible and cartilage.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the method and results of disk reposition in the treatment of traumatogenic TMJ ankylosis.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>In 19 cases of traumatogenic ankylosis of TMJ, the dislocated disks were repositioned during anthroplasty. In the operation, the dissection of dislocated disk was performed carefully around the TMJ. The disk was repositioned to its anatomic location over the top of condylar stump, then the lateral aspect of the disk was sutured to the soft tissue of zygomatic root.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>At the last follow-up examination, interincisal opening distance ranged from 24 to 43 mm in all cases (mean 32.63 mm), which approached or reached the normal level. No recurrence and TMJ symptom were found during the period of follow-up.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The disk repositioning in treatment of traumatogenic TMJ ankylosis is a feasible and effective approach to reconstruct the structure and function and prevent recurrence.</p>
